When someone mentions films based on the works of Stephen King normally your mind goes straight to the classic horror films – It, Carrie, Pet Semetary, etc. People seem to forget that King’s work has also been responsible for cinematic masterpieces like The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Now another film need to be added to that second list because The Long Walk is sheer cinematic brilliance.
Mangroves: Phuket’s Natural Defence

On Phuket’s East Coast, at Tawanron Beach where the Chalong River meets the sea, the roots of mangrove trees spread across the mudflats. Locals gather shellfish here, and photographers admire the play of light among the roots. These trees are more than picturesque: they are living coastal infrastructure. Their roots slow waves and trap sediment, their canopies blunt wind, their soils store carbon, and their food webs support fisheries. Where mangroves remain, people and property are measurably safer.

When it comes to modern day horror there is no bigger name than James Wan. While he made a name for himself alongside his good friend Leigh Whannell with the Saw franchise he soon found himself wrapped up in the world of The Conjuring – a horror series based around the cases and lives of paranormal explorers Lorraine and Ed Warren.

Some things in life we control. Others, we don’t. We don’t choose the weather. We don’t choose the headlines. But we do choose our actions. When it comes to the big issues in our world – like conflict, climate crisis, and the never-ending mess of litter – it’s easy to feel helpless. We feel like we have no control. But what if we looked closer? What if we humanised the problem?

When people talk about modern day revenge action films they seem to go straight to John Wick or Taken. Everybody seems to forget about the little gem called Nobody that landed in 2021. While the other two franchises had Hollywood A-list star power behind them Nobody made the unlikely Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) an action hero who truly appealed to the everyday audience member.

After a nice break of a few months due to having to train an orphaned kitten not to chase the wildlife away, I can at last get to venture out again. A year ago I came across a tiny lost kitten around four weeks old in a ditch that was flooded with no family around and she adopted me. So for a few months I had to put photography on hold until Leo (my cat) learned I wanted to take photos of the wildlife and not chase it.

There is an inner child within us, no matter our age. It’s the part that holds onto our earliest experiences – from all the good things to wounds and unmet needs. When a child’s behaviour triggers us into having our own meltdown, you can be certain that our inner child recognises something familiar which provokes our reaction. Whether it’s the feeling of being dismissed, controlled, or misunderstood – our inner child reacts.

One of the powers of cinema is the way that it is able to put audience members through a range of different emotions. We all cried when Bambi realised that his mother had died and we all celebrated when The Death Star was destroyed. What is not normal though is the emotionally journey that brand new romantic drama Materialists puts you through while watching it.

With the monsoon season in Phuket comes the wind, the waves and a heartbreaking sight on our beautiful beaches. My heart sinks every time I walk along the shoreline and see it – a carpet of plastic bottles, tangled fishing nets and styrofoam containers. It can feel overwhelming. The task of cleaning it all up seems impossible. Many people ask, “Why bother? The ocean will just bring more tomorrow.”

Camping has always been a somewhat divisive subject. For some, the idea of pitching up an often flimsy fabric structure in a random location and making it a temporary home for a period of time is joyous – the freedom it offers, the ability to be immersed in nature and the great outdoors is valued as a wonderous thing.

When you think of Spain, a few things might come to your mind: flamenco, paella, sangria, long beaches, and great music. Even though none of this is wrong, it’s a bit of a superficial way to describe it – kind of like describing the U.S. as a combination of hot dogs and cowboy boots. In reality, this is much more to Spain – its culture is layered, complex, and deeply diverse. If you’re only scratching the surface, you might be missing all the good stuff.

Scroll through Instagram and you’ll find parenting gurus preaching everything from attachment theory to Montessori minimalism. Other parents swear by discipline over freedom.
