Youth crime prevention project launched

PHUKET: An initiative to promote crime prevention among Phuket’s youth and drive towards a safer and more sustainable society was launched yesterday (Dec 14).

Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat oversaw the launch of the “School of Youth Justice” project at Srinagarindra the Princess Mother School, Phuket, in Wichit.

He was joined by Wichian Chaisorn, Director of the Phuket Provincial Justice Office, along with school executives, lecturers, staff and students.

A series of talks by subject matter experts gave students an insight and basic understanding of law while emphasising the pitfalls of crime and its negative impact on the local community. In addition to the talks, a series of interactive break out sessions involving the students took place to further develop their understanding.

Mr Wichian explained how the project, which will be ongoing, will play an integral role in establishing a more orderly and secure society by educating youngsters as to their own personal responsibilities and value in the local community.

“The aim of the project is to create a society that respects the law and has sustainable social immunity while teaching youngsters not to become victims or perpetrators of crimes in society,” he said as part of his openings remarks at the event.

Mr Wichian further explained that an overall budget of B300,000 has been allocated by the Phuket Provincial Justice Office to engage relevant agencies and expert lecturers to provide the knowledge to students through a variety of activities that focus on building an understanding of the law and skills to protect themselves from dangers in daily life.

Governor Sophon praised Srinagarindra the Princess Mother School, Phuket for leveraging its respected position as a leading educational institution to lend support to the local community and help drive the overall objective of the project.

“This project focuses on social safety and instills discipline and respect for rules in children and youngsters which will help develop them into good citizens in future,” commented Governor Sophon.

“Children and youngsters are crucial to the fture of our nation,” he added. “Therefore building social immunity to prevent them from becoming victims or perpetrators of crime is very important, which is why we fully support this initiative,” he concluded.
