Mr Phisit highlighted the team’s long-standing involvement in local politics, tracing its roots back to 1974. He noted that the Young People Team has consistently prioritised public service and social welfare for all residents, rather than catering to specific interest groups. The transition of leadership from former head Ms Somjai Suwannasuphaphana to Mr Phisit marks the continuation of these efforts.
“Our core policy, ‘We take care of everyone throughout their whole life,’ aims to enhance the quality of life across multiple dimensions,” Mr Phisit stated.
“From prenatal care and childcare centres to education, lifelong learning and elderly support, our focus is on comprehensive and equitable public services,” he added.
The team also pledges to improve public utilities and infrastructure, ensuring equal access to essential services. By engaging directly with the community, they aim to address local concerns effectively and enhance municipal administration, Mr Phisit said.
Although officially formed in 1974, the Young Turks Party national body gained traction in the wake of the Thammasat Massacre in 1976.
The party has long had success at the local level in Phuket. Young Turks candidate Somjai Suwansupana was elected to her third term as Phuket Town Mayor in 2012.
The local municipality elections will be held throughout the country on May 11, with current municipal council members and mayors completing their terms on Mar 27.
Under election law, the elections will invoke a 24-hour ban on the sale of alcohol throughout the country from 6pm May 10 through to 6pm May 11.
