This year’s celebration, themed ‘Celebrating 20 years of giving: Thank you from the heart to donors’, honoured and thanked the blood donors who regularly donate to save lives.
The event, held Pearl Phuket Hotel in Mueang District, was presided over by Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat, joined by Suwit Suriyawong, Secretary of the Phuket Red Cross Society.
Governor Sophon highlighted the significance of World Blood Donor Day, celebrated annually on June 14. He emphasised the critical role of blood donors in saving millions of lives worldwide through their generous donations.
Mr Suwit noted that despite the global demand for blood, only some countries have access to safe and quality blood products.
“Many nations continue to face challenges in maintaining adequate blood supplies,” he said.
Mr Suwit stressed the importance of regular, voluntary blood donations and outlined the goals of the event: to thank current donors, recruit new donors and encourage regular, sustainable blood donations.
The event also aimed to raise awareness about the importance of voluntary blood donation and its impact on healthcare. It sought to promote understanding and participation in blood donation activities, emphasising the health benefits for donors and the lifesaving impact on patients.
Governor Sophon honoured the occasion by presenting plaques of appreciation to agencies supporting blood donation activities in Phuket.
He also distributed souvenirs to donors who have given blood more than 100 times and awarded pins of honour to those who have donated 96, 84, 72, 60, and 48 times.
