Worker injured in transformer explosion in Patong

PHUKET: A Myanmar construction worker was injured yesterday (Sept 21) when a steel frame he was dismantling struck a power transformer and caused it to explode in the heart of Patong.

Patong Police reported that the accident occurred at about 11:40am next to the Sleep With Me Hotel on Rat Uthit 200 Pi Road. The injured man, identified as Mr Pay Soe, 46, was working on the demolition of a row of shophouses for Phuket SCT Construction Co Ltd when the incident happened.

While removing a steel sign frame from the rooftop of the building, the frame made contact with a nearby transformer, triggering an explosion and a shower of sparks. Sparks struck Mr Pay Soe on the leg, causing injuries, police reported.

Emergency responders transported him to Patong Hospital for treatment. His injuries were not reported as life-threatening.

Patong Police Deputy Superintendent (Investigation) Pol Lt Col Chomphunuch Anantayakun led the response and confirmed that officers inspected the site, photographed the scene, and prepared a crime scene map. The Electricity Authority of Thailand was notified to assess and repair the damaged transformer, police confirmed.

The Phuket Provincial Forensic Team was called to participate in the inspection, and witnesses were interviewed as part of the standard investigation.

Patong Police Superintendent Pol Col Chalermchai Hirasawat confirmed that follow-up actions are underway to ensure the site is safe and to determine any further liabilities.
