For reasons unexplained, the woman’s death has yet to be recognised by provincial officials keeping tally of the deaths and injuries resulting in road accidents during the national road safety campaign that began last Friday (Dec 27).
Phuket Provincial Police confirmed that Atchima Sittirak, 35, from Nakhon Sri Thammarat, died in the accident.
Police were called to the scene, at the entrance to Soi Mali Kaew in Ratsada, at about 6:30pm.
Ms Atchima was a passenger on a motorbike driven by her husband, Kraisak Sittirak, 31, with their 2-year-old daughter, Nong Salchabil, also on board.
The family was traveling along Sri Suthat Rd toward Koh Siray and were turning into Soi Mali Kaew when they collided with another motorbike, driven by a 15-year-old male, traveling in the opposite direction, police said.
Ms Atchima sustained severe injuries and was initially treated at Phuket Provincial Hospital before being transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital for further care.
Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries at about 10pm last night (Dec 29).
Phuket City Police said they were continuing their investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause and any potential liability.
