At an event attended by Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat yesterday (Jan 24), Phuket Agriculture Chief Charatsri Khamphirasingh emphasised the importance of cultivating local food sources to mitigate the impact of crises, such as the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Phuket Provincial Agriculture Office, aims to empower the local community by fostering a culture of “Urban Agriculture”. The focus is on creating sustainable solutions that not only ensure food security at the household level but also contribute to income generation, thereby reducing overall expenses, explained an official report of the event.
“Urban Agriculture”, as explained by local participant Khamphirasingh, encompasses a variety of farming practices within urban areas. This includes the cultivation of crops, livestock farming, and aquaculture, Ms Khamphirasingh said.
The goal is to not only provide a local source of food but also to enhance green spaces in urban environments. Techniques such as vertical planting and roadside cultivation are encouraged, along with the creation of vegetable patches on walls within communities, she added.
The benefits extend beyond mere sustenance. Urban agriculture offers a multifaceted approach, providing complete nutrition, income opportunities and even recreational spaces for the community, noted Phuket Agriculture Chief Ms Charatsri.
“Residents are encouraged to adopt these practices, creating a positive impact on both individual households and the wider community,” she said.
“The Phuket Agriculture Office considers urban agriculture not only as a means to ensure food security but also as a pathway to happiness. The initiative promotes the joy of growing one’s food, the availability of fresh and safe produce, cost reduction, and the satisfaction of contributing to one’s sustenance, she added.
In a call to action, Ms Khamphirasingh invited the people of Phuket to participate actively in urban farming, emphasising the potential for increased household income, safe crop production, and a stronger sense of community pride. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to create resilient and self-sufficient communities, prepared to face unforeseen challenges.
