Two killed as pickup wipes out, hits motorbike

PHUKET: Two people were killed and several more injured when a pickup truck carrying workers in the back crossed the central reservation on Phra Baramee Rd on the Kathu side of Patong Hill and struck a motorbike yesterday evening (May 7).

Police were informed of the accident, In front of the Tiger Kingdom tourist attraction, at about 6:30pm.

Police along with rescue workers from the Kusoldharm Foundation and from Kathu Municipality arrived to find 10 people injured, two of them seriously.

At the scene was a blue Isuzu pickup truck, registered Nakhon Sri Thammarat. On its side beside the road with damage to its windscreen.

There were 10 male and female workers on and beside the road with minor injuries.

A red Honda PCX motorbike registered in Phuket was nearby with heavy damage to its front.

The two people who were reported as seriously injured were a man and a woman who were riding the motorbike that was struck by the pickup. Both were unconscious and unresponsive at the scene.

The man who was driving the motorbike, Udom Haadsoi, 61, was rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His passenger, Kwanta Haad Soi, 53, was rushed to Bangkok Hospital Phuket, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the pickup, Montree Saengnak, 46, suffered no injuries in the accident.

Montree was taken to Kathu Police Station, where he was questioned by Kathu Police Chief Pol Col Rungrit Rattanaphakdi.

Montree said he was bringing 10 workers back from painting a hotel in Karon to a workers’ camp in Thalang.

While returning, there was a light rain that had made the road slippery, Montree said.

He was driving at about 60km/h when he lost control of the pickup, causing the vehicle to cross the central reservation and hit the motorbike, with the pickup left flipped onto its side.

Montree tested negative for alcohol, police confirmed.

At last report Montree was being detained for further questioning and for further legal action.
