Toyota Gazoo Racing revs up Saphan Hin

MOTOR SPORTS: Saphan Hin Park was alive with the sounds of roaring engines last weekend (Aug 5-6) as the Phuket leg of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Motorsport Thailand event took place.

The ever-popular event is part of a flat car style race taking place across five locations throughout the country and demonstrates Toyota’s commitment to developing motorsports in Thailand.

The competition was split into four separate categories with men and women drivers participating. The results were as follows:

The Yaris hatchback ECO car class (division 1):

Winner: No. 39 Nipitphon Wattananit
2nd place: No. 99 Phuriphan Wechwongsatechawat
3rd place: No. 17 Paichayon Thongchua
4th place: No. 51 Panatkot Asadathorn
5th place: No. 68 Phureepat Leelanan

The Yaris hatchback ECO car class (division 2):

Winner: No. 45 Phuwaphon Thaweekraikul
2nd place: No. 27 Sathaporn Weerachue
3rd place: No. 36 Thitinat Pumarin
4th place: No. 15 Boonchok Thiratakorn
5th place: No. 66 Srittana Mit-Aree

The Yaris hatchback ECO car class, catering for entery-level racers, saw a new improved version of the popular model with a gasoline engine 1,200 cc dual VVT-i. The division 1 and 2 winners of this category qualify to test pilot a Yaris E-fuel car as part of a carbon neutral initiative in the popular TV show ‘Dream Racer Season 2’.

The Yaris ATIV class:
Winner: No. 128 Punnalin Tuadet
2nd place: No. 138 Sawitree Kwangkaew
3rd place: No. 114 Iris Hofschmidt
4th place: No. 107 Sitanan Pikulkajorn
5th place: No. 135 Piyawadee Pruetthisan

The Yaris ATIV was an all female race in a 1,200 cc Dual VVT-i petrol engine model that replaced the VIOS One model used in previous years.

The Hilux REVO class:
Winner: No. 2 Ekasit Namsangpha
2nd place: No. 98 Mekratchakitak Kalantanont
3rd place: No. 44 Arunpong Sririt

The Hilux REVO car, powered by a GD Super Power 2,400 cc common rail diesel engine, delivers the performance of a tough pick-up truck, emphasising strength, durability and suspension, ideal for drivers who like a more fierce and robust race.

The Corolla ALTIS GR Sport Car class:
Winner: No. 3 Kentaro Chiba
2nd place: No. 25 Norarat Apiwat
3rd place: No. 46 Sakchai Yeamwatana
4th place: No. 45 Thayaphon Kongsuwan
5th place: No. 68 Phureepat Leelanan

The Corolla ALTIS GR Sport Car is a signature model of quality, durability and unsurpassed reliability powered by a dual VVT-i 1,800 cc gasoline engine and a streamline structure that provides perfect balance for engine performance, suspension, steering and braking systems.

Running concurrently with the two-day race was the Toyota Gazoo Racing Thailand Academy Campus Tour which provided opportunity for youngsters interested in motorsports to learn more about the sport through a series of talks and meet-and-greet sessions with experts and former race winners.

Additionally there was a series of stalls offering special promotions from car dealers, as well as food and beverage outlets, a Cosplay contest and live musical entertainment from acts including Summer Blue, Daisy and The Rizz Unison.

The Phuket leg is one of five taking place as part of a national tour. The tour opener took place at the Bangsaen Street Circuit in Chonburi between June 30 - July 2, with the next leg scheduled for the Chang International Circuit Stadium in Buriram (Sept 1- 3). After that the tour moves to the Chiang Mai 700 Year Stadium in Chiang Mai (Nov 17 – 19), before returning to Buriram for the final race on Dec 21 – 23.
