The incident was recorded on video by a car travelling behind and shared on social media.
Karon Police reported that the tourists were seen hanging out of the car windows at about 3pm on Tuesday (Jan 30).
By 5:45pm that day, traffic police had tracked the tourists down and had them brought to Karon Police Station and “fined according to the law”, Karon Police noted in their report.
Which law the tourists were fined under was not reported, or much in fines they were required to pay. The report also did not identify the tourists by name or nationality.
According to the report, the tourists apologised for their behaviour and “felt guilty about the incident. They said they would not do it again and “asked for the opportunity to be a good tourist”, said the report.
The tourists also said they would be a voice in inviting tourists to visit Phuket, and said they would recommend to their friends and other foreign tourists that they must strictly follow traffic rules to ensure their safety and the safety of others, the report concluded.
Police across Phuket over the past week have taken to issuing public warnings while reporting aberrant behaviour by tourists, including warning against unsafe driving and parking illegally.
