The eighth annual edition of the hugely popular ‘Tour Of Phuket’ starts tomorrow (Mar 8) and runs until Sunday (Mar 10).
The race is split into three separate stages: Stage 1 is 6.44 kilometre time trial in Phuket on Friday; Stage 2 is a 180km cycle through Phuket and Phang Nga on Saturday; and Stage 3 also takes in the wonderful views of both provinces on Sunday.
In addition to the competitive race, leisure cyclists are welcome to join the Gran Fondo on Stage 2 and Stage 3, a unique opportunity to enjoy a more relaxed ride while exploring the stunning routes of Phuket and Phang Nga.
A press conference was held at Angsana Laguna Phuket on Tuesday (Mar 5) to officially announce the event, overseen by Pairoj Srilamul, Thalang District Chief, who was joined by Babol Torivio, Chief Executive Officer of Singapore-based Cycosports, Jurgen Zack of Phuket-based Z-Coaching, and Suneerat Ruchi, Deputy Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).
Mr Pairoj said the event attracts a large number or participants and spectators who appreciate the increasingly popular sport of cycling, which in turn helps stimulate the local economy.
“The popularity of cycling has increased dramatically in recent years, both among local residents in Phuket and people living overseas,” said Mr Pairoj.
Mr Babol explained how he and his company Cycosports regard Phuket as a location with significant potential to host cycling events and how it is a pleasure to be involved with this exciting event.
As the Cycosports website explains, the three-day race “not only tests your endurance but also offers a captivating journey through the breathtaking landscapes of Phuket and Phang-Nga, providing an unforgettable cycling experience.”
Last year’s event was the first time it had been held in three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing restrictions this brought with travel and sports events.
The event has been officially certified by the Bicycle Sports Association of Thailand under Royal patronage, officials confirmed.
