The works to install drains along the route, 750 metres between Muk Dok Khao and Phuket International Airport (between Km.2+500 and Km.3+250), began on Thursday (Sept 5) and saw traffic reduced to one lane.
The closure is necessary to allow the installation of a ‘box culvert’ drainage system beneath the road surface, the Phuket Highways Office explained.
Today’s announcement confirmed the extension to the period of work due to heavy rain which officials stated was proving an obstacle and causing delays.
While the work is carried out, vehicles travelling southbound from Phuket Airport will continue to have access to one lane.
Vehicles travelling northbound, heading from the Muk Dok Khao intersection toward Phuket Airport, will need to use an alternative route. Drivers are advised to take a left turn at Km.2+500 towards Baan Phru Somphan to reach the airport.
The announcement extended apologies on behalf of the Phuket Highways Office for any inconvenience caused and vowed to expedite the work so as to return the traffic lanes to normal as quickly as possible.
Additionally, the department urged anyone who discovers any damaged road surfaces, potholes, power outages, traffic signal malfunctions, dead trees in the road area, damaged traffic signs, etc to call 076 212 179 during office hours or the Department of Highways hotline on 1586 (free call 24 hours).
