The decision, made on Tuesday (Nov 18) following recommendations from the National Identity Committee, is based on historical and genetic evidence of their unique traits, reports the Bangkok Post.

Thai cats have been an integral part of Thailand’s culture for centuries, featured in traditions, folklore and daily life. Known for their distinctive look and friendly, outgoing nature, they are a source of national pride.

International interest in Thai cats is growing, with breeders seeking to register purebreds and establish standards. Protecting Thailand’s feline heritage is now a priority to prevent foreign claims.

Currently, five pure Thai breeds exist: Suphalak, Korat, Wichienmas, Konja and Khao Manee. Official recognition is expected to promote conservation, standardisation and wider adoption among pet enthusiasts.

The move also aims to protect ownership rights and prevent foreign registrations. It is seen as an opportunity to stimulate creative industries, tourism and cultural exports linked to Thai cats.

The Ministry of Culture supports the plan, viewing it as a key step in preserving Thailand’s identity and ensuring these iconic cats thrive both locally and globally.
