The victim was an unnamed Thai national, Mr Sattha confirmed. One person, a female, is still missing, he added.

It takes the death toll to 10 after heavy rains in the early hours of yesterday led to flash flooding and landslides that affected Karon, as well as parts of Chalong and Rawai.

The other victims recovered include a Russian man and woman, a Thai woman from Sakon Nakhon Province and six Myanmar nationals (three men and three women), Vice Governor Sattha said.

A total of 19 people have also been confirmed as being injured in the landslide and 209 households have been affected by the floods.

The relentless downpours throughout Thursday night (Aug 22) dumped 200 millimetres of rainfall on the area, Vice Governor Sattha confirmed.

Phuket authorities have declared nine villages in three subdistricts as disaster zones due to flooding and mudslides, as follows:

- Chalong Subdistrict, villages 8, 9 and 10, with 40 households or 123 people affected.
- Rawai Subdistrict, villages 1 and 2, with 55 households or 174 people affected.
- Karon Subdistrict, villages 1, 2, 3 and 4, with 114 households or 382 people affected.

The declaration enables government agencies, local administrative organisations and private sectors to coordinate disaster relief efforts in the impacted areas, Vice Governor Sattha explained.

The Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command Center has monitored the situation in the area and found that the amount of water flooding in many areas has decreased to only low-lying areas.

Officials explained that if there is no further rain in the area, it is expected that the situation will return to normal.

The search continues in Karon where the landslide occurred which left many houses buried and continues to be monitored, officials added.
