The NNT also say that it was a chance for media to review maritime safety measures in an effort to restore confidence among tourists.
According to the NNT report, posted on their official website at 10:11am yesterday, TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn, accompanied more than 20 media members from Thailand and China to Phuket’s Ao Chalong Pier, where a command centre was established following the disaster on July 5.
During the tour, Mr Yuthasak confirmed Thailand prioritises tourism safety and pointed out that the Prime Minister has instructed all relevant agencies to take lessons from the incident and boost visitor confidence.
The PM is to travel to China today (July 18) to meet with private sector members and confirm with them Thailand’s commitment to tourist safety, the NNT report states.
Meanwhile, the report also states that Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong, has announced that the province is to upgrade its maritime safety with checkpoints for boat captains as well as passengers.
The province is to integrate its work with Royal Thai Navy Region 3, the Phuket Marine Department office and the Phuket Tourism and Sports office.
The report also confirms that a 24-hour maritime safety centre has been established at Ao Chalong Pier which is able to communicate with and coordinate between all related units, and produces media in five different languages to ensure tour operators can properly guide travellers.
A meeting is to be held soon with members of the province’s tourism network to instil further safety practices, the report concludes.
