The event, organised by the Peranakan Association of Thailand in collaboration with the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO), Phuket City Municipality, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the Phuket Tourist Association and other network partners, showcased the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Presided over by Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat and his wife Mrs Busadee, President of the Phuket branch of the Red Cross, the event also saw the participation of Phuket Vice Governor Adul Chuthong; Dr Koson Tanguthai, President of the Peranakan Association of Thailand and Anchalee Thepbutr, President of the Phuket Arts Association.

The celebrations, held from Saturday through yesterday (May 11-13) were centred around maintaining the sacredness and elegance of the Baba-Peranakan wedding rituals.

Couples participating in the event dressed in traditional costumes and took part in authentic ceremonies held at historical sites such as Ban Ang Mor Lao (an ancient Western-style mansion) ‘Baan Hongyok’.

They also captured memorable moments in Phuket Old Town, paid respects to Lord Buddha Pud Jor, enjoyed a sunset catamaran cruise and had a luxurious honeymoon at a resort on the Andaman Sea.

The highlight of the event was the newlywed couple parade on Sunday (May 12). The procession, warmly welcomed by local residents, featured participants dressed in traditional attire.

Starting from Ang Mo Lao Hongyok, the parade proceeded along Thepkrasattri Rd, past the Peranakannitat Museum and the Clock Tower Circle, down Phuket Rd, along Montri Rd and ended at Queen Sirikit Park. The parade showcased various styles of ‘kebaya’, the distinctive dress of Baba-Peranakan women, highlighting the unique cultural identity of Phuket.

This year’s ‘Sweet Baba Phuket Wedding Festival’ not only celebrated the union of couples but also emphasised the importance of preserving and honoring the cultural heritage of the Baba-Peranakan community, ensuring that these cherished traditions continue to thrive for future generations.
