The competition is being organised by Patong Municipality in collaboration with the Kalim Reef Surfer Surfing Club, the Patong Surf Club, the Phuket Surfing Club and the Surfing Baan Kalim Community, and will run from tomorrow (Sept 8) until Sunday (Sept 10).
Organisers explained there will be five different categories of competition open to the general public, namely:
- Men’s short board, open to all male competitors without any age limit;
- Men’s long board, open to all male competitors without any age limit;
- Women’s long board, open to all female competitors without any age limit;
- A junior division open to males under the age of 14;
- and a junior division open to females under the age of 14.
Cash prizes and trophies will be up for grabs for the top three finsihers in each category and the competition will take place daily between 7am and 4:30pm.
A stand has been built for spectators at Kalim Beach to enable fans of the sport to enjoy the action, which promises to be very entertaining given the recent heavy weather which has created significant swells and waves suitable for good competition.
Organisers have not made any mention of potential postponement of the competition in the event of particularly heavy weather.
