Snake surprise in Wichit

PHUKET: Rescue workers at the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation branch at Wichit Municipality (DDPM-Wichit) received a small surprise on Monday (Mar 25) when they arrived at a local resident’s house find the snake they had been asked to remove was more than two metres long.

The DDPM Wichit officers were called to the home, in Soi Thepanusorn, in Moo 4, Wichit, at about 5:20pm.

Armed with a standard pole with a loop at the end for catching snakes, the officers set about safely taking the snake into care. The task proved a little onerous at the beginning as the snake had burrowed its way under a water tank in the yard of the home.

The DDPM officers soon had the snake safely in control and proceeded to remove it from the home.

The DDPM officers later released the snake in a natural area away from people’s homes.

While the snake was rather large, a reader of The Phuket News’ Russian-language sister newspaper Novosti Phuketa identified the snake as a member of the non-venomous Colubridae family.

DDPM Wichit noted that its had three centres that people can contact in case of emergency, or if they are in need of assistance such as having a large snake removed ‒ or more recently to report any wildfires in the area.

The three centres, accessible 24 hours a day, are designated as:

  • Relief Center (Suan Sri Phuwanat): Tel. 076-525199
  • Panwa Center (Ao Makham): Tel. 076-684443
  • Surakul Center (behind Surakul Stadium): Tel. 076-540899
