All six accidents occurred in Mueang Phuket District, while Kathu and Thalang districts reported no incidents. The victims ‒ all of whom sustained injuries requiring admission to hospital ‒ were riding motorcycles at the time of the accidents.

Statistics show that three of the injured were aged between 15 and 24 years. Four of the victims were male, and two were female.

Speeding was cited as the leading cause of accidents, accounting for 45.5% of cases. Other causes included cutting off other vehicles (27.3%) and drunk driving (18.2%).

Officials also noted that none of the injured had a valid driver’s license at the time of the accidents. All were motorcyclists, and helmet use was found to be absent in every case.

The ‘Seven Days of Danger’ Songkran safety campaign in Phuket runs from Apr 11-17, with daily updates being released by the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office (DDPM Phuket) as part of nationwide efforts to reduce road accidents during the holiday period.

Meanwhile, a pickup truck carrying workers lost control and skidded off a hillside road in Kamala at around 10am today (Apr 12), leaving six people injured, including one seriously.

The incident prompted an immediate response from rescue teams of the Kamala Tambon Administrative Organisation (OrBorTor) and the Advanced Emergency Medical Service (EMS) unit from Patong Hospital.

All injured individuals were transported to Patong Hospital for treatment.

According to initial reports, the vehicle veered off the road while navigating a slope before plunging down the hill. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Chalermpong Saengdee, Member of Parliament for Phuket’s District 2, visited the scene shortly after the incident to follow up on the response and express concern for the victims.

Officials are urging drivers to exercise caution, especially during the Songkran Festival period, when travel increases and road conditions can become more hazardous.
