The incident occurred around 11:22am yesterday (Mar 13) at a traffic checkpoint in Cherng Talay after Pol Lt Siriphet Kasemul stopped Lim Jia Jie, 37, for riding his black and red Honda ADV motorbike without a helmet.

Lim was then unable to produce a valid driving license when asked by Lt Siriphet, prompting the latter to write and issue a ticket for the two respective offences.

Officer Siriphet then asked Lim to accompany him to the nearby Cherng Talay police station to pay the fine.

Once at the station Lim threw the money directly in the face of Lt Siriphet before proceding to punch him in the back of the head, causing minor injuries.

Lim was restrained by officers and handed over to an investigation team to face further legal action, including charges of insulting and assaulting an officer.

While the specifics relating to these additional, far more serious charges were not disclosed by police in officials reports, Thai law states attacking and/or obstructing an on-duty police officer carries a fine of up to B20,000 and a year imprisonment, likewise an identical charge for attacking an officer.

Similarly, the fine Lim incurred for his traffic violations was not disclosed in official police reports although Thai law states a fine of up to B2,000 for riding without a helmet and up to B1,000 for no possession of a valid driver’s license.

It was not confirmed whether Lim is a tourist visiting Phuket or whether he resides here.
