Search resumes for Phuket jet-ski rider missing in storm

PHUKET: Rescue teams this morning (July 18) resumed their search for 25-year-old Koset ‘Oat’ Deebukdam, who disappeared while riding a jet-ski off Naka Yai Island, off Phuket’s east coast, after he was caught in the storm that hit Phuket late yesterday afternoon.

Rescue workers from Pa Khlok and members from Volunteer Defense Corps launched a search yesterday and continued until 7:30pm before the search was suspended due to the conditions being deemed too dangerous.

The search resumed this morning at 7am.

Rescue officials reported that the search team today includes 30 jet skis, one speedboat with five members from the Volunteer Defense Corps on board.

A ‘Rescue Centre’ has been established at Ao Por Pier, where emergency responders remain on standby, to co-ordinate the search effort.

A boat from the Phuket Marine Office will join the search later this morning, rescue officials added.

Mr Koset was last seen at about 3:30pm between Naka Yai Island and Naka Noi Island, Thalang Police Chief Lt Col Theerawat Liamsuwan confirmed yesterday.

“A team of about 10 to 15 jet-skis were sent out to find him, but so far we have not received any reports of success,” he said.

Mr Koset was not wearing a life jacket and cannot swim, Col Theerawat noted. (See story here.)
