The Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Centre Region 3 branch (Thai-MECC 3), based in Phuket, began their search after being informed of the incident, which occurred around 4am.

Upon receiving the distress call via the 1465 maritime emergency hotline, police immediately launched a search operation. However, by nightfall, there was still no sign of the missing man.

Vice Admiral Suwat Donsakul, Director of Thai-MECC 3, ordered patrol vessel T.272 to the scene to assist in search and rescue efforts. Jet-skis and other equipment were deployed with the support of the Phuket Marine Office, as authorities intensified the search in the area north of Naka Island.

The missing man has been identified as Dane Johnson, an American citizen and nephew of William Johnson, owner of the yacht ‘Demarest’ and a Phuket-based clinic operator.

Mr Johnson had recently arrived in Thailand after reportedly undergoing personal rehabilitation for depression at a treatment facility in the US.

According to reports, the ‘Demarest’ was anchored near Naka Island at the time of the incident. Contrary to initial reports, neither the yacht nor any individuals involved had any ties to Cape Yamu, and the earlier references to that area were inaccurate.

Individuals involved in reporting the incident are urging the public and media to avoid spreading incorrect information that may cause confusion or unfairly link unrelated locations or individuals to the incident.

“We appreciate your attention to detail and your commitment to journalistic integrity. Thank you in advance for your understanding and support in ensuring accurate reporting,” one individual told The Phuket News.

Search efforts remain ongoing, and anyone with information or who may have seen anything unusual in the area is encouraged to contact the Marine Police emergency line at 1465, which operates 24 hours a day.
