A copy of the order signed by Russian Prime Minister Dmitriy Medvedev was published today (July 31) on pravo.gov.ru, the Russian Government's official website for publishing legal information.

The order was signed by PM Medvedev on Saturday (July 28).

According to the text of the document, the Russian Government accepts the Russian MFA’s proposal to open a Consulate-General in Phuket and instructed the Russian MFA to proceed with calculating the number of diplomatic personnel for it.

The order does not specify when the Consulate-General is to open.

Also, the location of the Consulate-General is described in the document as “in the City of Phuket”, presumably meaning just “Phuket province”.

No additional information regarding forthcoming Consulate-General could be found on the ministry’s or the embassy's websites.

Russia’s plans to open a consulate in Phuket were first revealed one year ago in the Russian MFA’s official statement released ahead of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s visit to Thailand. (See story here).

“Further growth of the tourist flow will be facilitated by the planned opening of the Russian consulate in Phuket and the establishment of an honorary consulate on Koh Samui,” the statement said.

Russian honorary consulate on Koh Samui opened earlier this year.
