Running event to mark Guan Yu Shrine anniversary

RUNNING: Officials have confirmed that a running event open to the public is being organised to coincide with celebrations of the 139th anniversary of the Guan Yu Shrine in Ban Na Bon.

At a press conference at Provincial Hall at 9am yesterday morning (May 23), Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat explained that people are welcome to register and be part of the run, which will take place on Sunday, July 21.

Broader celebrations to mark the landmark anniversary of the popular shrine are scheduled for July 26-30, he added.

The run, entitled “Step with your heart. Go with faith,” will be split into two categories, Governor Sophon explained, with a 9.65-kilometre mini marathon and a 5.55km fun run both set to start at 6am on the morning of July 21.

Joining Governor Sophon at yesterday’s press conference were: Phuket Vice Governors Sattha Thongkham and Kong Ek Adul Chuthong; Akara Suwatthikul, Phuket Provincial Defense Officer; Sophon Thongsai, Head of the Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office; Tasaneeya Srirattanapraphan, Deputy Director of the Election Commission for Phuket Province; Rangsan Phonsamak, Dean of the Faculty of Science, Phuket Rajabhat University; Suthiphong Suwandechakul, Assistant Manager of the Provincial Waterworks Authority Phuket Branch; Ratchadaphon Oin, head of the Phuket office of Tourism and Sports; and Lertchai Wangtrakuldee, Director of the Phuket office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Those interested in applying can do so directly at Guan Yu Shrine until May 31 or by completing and submitting this Google form. The race is open to all ages and there is a B319 entry fee for each participant.
