Road closure warning issued ahead of Laguna Phuket Triathlon

TRIATHLON: Police in Cherng Talay have issued an official warning for motorists and residents in Laguna and surrounding areas to be aware of road closures ahead of this weekend’s Laguna Phuket Triathlon.

The notice was posted on the official Thalang Police Facebook page and warned people living in or travelling to the area to expect delays as certain restrictions are enforced to enable the event to take place safely.

The major impact will be experienced on Sunday (Nov 19), the main day of the Triathlon event, between 6:30am and 12:30pm although there is a practice session for the bike section of the route tomorrow (Nov 17) which will also impact traffic access and flow between 8am and 11am.

The roads immediately impacted by the event and corresponding timeframes include:

- The roads within Laguna including Lagoon Rd (between 6:30am – 11am)

- Boat Avenue intersection (6:40am – 8:30am)

- Ban Don Cherng Talay Rd (route 4030), Boat Avenue intersection, Ban Don market and Soi Ban Riang (between 6:40am – 8:30am)

- Soi Ban Riang, Thung Thalang Chanasuk, Wat Muang (between 6:40am and 8:30am)

- Soi Khoktanod 1 and 3, Na Soi Rd, Nong Wa Rd, Phru Somphan, Ngan Thawee Rd (between 6:40am – 10am)

- The motorcycle lane of route 402 at the entrance to Phru Somphan Rd and Ngan Thawee Rd to Muang Thalang School (between 5:50am to 10:30am)

- The road next to Muang Thalang School, Phru Somphan intersection, Ban Nopping and Pak Phii Rd motorcycle lane (between 5:30am – 10:40am)

- New Sanambin Road at the Phang Nga intersection (between 6am – 10:55am)

- Old Sanambin Road, Sanam Yaek to Ban Sakhu intersection (between 7am – 9:30am)

- Ban Sakhu to Ban Layan Rd (route 4018), Soi Layan 2, Nai Thon Beach, Ban Don to Khok Tanod Rd (between 7am - 11am)

The Triathlon in its entirety is scheduled to finish at 12:30pm on Sunday and roads are expected to revert to normal shortly afterwards, once all spectators have left and it is safe to do so.

Police have advised all motorists planning to travel in the area to expect delays and advised to leave 30 minutes earlier for any scheduled trips.

Those travelling to the airport from Kamala, Bang Tao, Surin and Layan are advied to use Srisoonthorn Rd (route 4025) to the Heroine’s Monument and then Thepkrasattri Rd (route 402) northwards. Similarly, those travelling from Patong are advised to take the bypass road to join up with Thepkrasattri Rd.

More than 1,200 athletes and 2,000 visitors from approximately 30 countries are expected to descend upon the Laguna area for the 29th edition of the hugely popular event.
