Triggered by heavy rains in the early hours of the morning, the landslide killed 13 people, injured 19 others and damaged dozens of homes.
Soil on the hill cascaded down, burying homes and other residential buildings in Soi Patak 2, Karon, said the formal complaint, filed with Karon Police yesterday (Dec 26).
The disaster claimed the lives of several residents and left many others injured, sparking widespread concern about safety and accountability, said the residents through their representative, Thanapol Nilpusri, from the Phuket Lawyers Council.
Mr Thanapol has been granted power of attorney by the relatives of seven victims ‒ four deceased and three injured.
The victims allege that construction at the Big Buddha Viewpoint, a landmark project managed by the Phra Phuttha Ming Mongkol Sattha Foundation 45 and overseen by its president, Suporn Wanichkul, was the primary cause of the landslide.
In their complaint, the victims’ representatives accuse the foundation and its president of negligence leading to the deaths and injuries. They are seeking to prosecute the parties involved to the fullest extent of the law.
Karon Police formally accepted the complaint.
The police recognising the complaint named Pol Col Khundet Na Nong Khai as Superintendent of Karon Police Station, and Pol Lt Col Ekkasak Kwanwan, Senior Inspector (Investigation), as the responsible investigator.
The complaint itself was marked as received by Pol Lt Col Chana Sutthimas, Deputy Superintendent (Investigation) at Karon Police Station.
