The initiative was launched at Barai Beach in front of the sea gypsy village on Thursday (Aug 21). Raway Mayor Thames Kraitat led the activity, joined by municipal executives, council members, department heads, staff and local volunteers from the Rawai Local Volunteers (LAV).
The campaign highlights the importance of preserving natural resources and maintaining a clean environment as part of efforts to attract tourists and support community livelihoods, Rawai Municipality explained in its announcement.
By strengthening grassroots economic opportunities, the municipality hopes to generate steady income for residents, particularly the sea gypsy community, while ensuring long-term sustainability, the announcement explained.
Mayor Thames said the cleanup not only helped restore the beauty of the local coastline but also encouraged community participation in environmental stewardship. “Keeping our beaches clean benefits both tourism and the quality of life of our residents,” he noted.
The project is part of ongoing efforts across Phuket to balance tourism growth with conservation, with Rawai positioning itself as a model for sustainable coastal management.
