The initiative underscores the importance of second chances and the role of skills training in building a sustainable future for rehabilitated individuals.
Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat presided over the official opening ceremony last night (Dec 10), joined by Pairot Khamintakul, Chief Inspector of the Department of Corrections, and Prinya Srithanyakaew, Commander of Phuket Provincial Prison.
Also present were representatives from various correctional institutions and government agencies.
Governor Sophon highlighted the exhibition’s mission of showcasing vocational skills training for inmates, a cornerstone of the Department of Corrections’ rehabilitation efforts.
“This event reflects our commitment to equipping inmates with skills to reintegrate into society as productive citizens,” he said.
The collaboration between government and private sectors aims to create pathways for inmates to secure honest employment and financial independence upon release, he added.
The week-long event, open daily from 9am to 10pm until Dec 16, features participation from 24 prisons and correctional institutions in Department of Corrections’ areas designated Regions 8 and 9.
On show, and for sale, are a diverse range of inmate-produced goods, including handicrafts and high-quality products created during their incarceration.
Phuket Prison Commander Mr Prinya emphasised that proceeds from the exhibition will serve as revolving funds for future vocational training programs.
“This initiative allows the public and tourists to support inmate rehabilitation while contributing to their journey toward becoming valuable members of society,” he noted.
