Prince Chulcherm passes away aged 78

BANGKOK: Maj Gen MC Chulcherm Yugala, widely known as “Than Chai Mai”, a former Royal Household military officer, passed away peacefully at his residence in Mae Rim district of Chiang Mai this morning (Nov 27). He was 78.

The Facebook page “Chulcherm Yugala” this morning reported that MC Chulcherm died at 8:13am in Chiang Mai, reports the Bangkok Post.

MC Chulcherm was the son of Prince Anusorn Mongkolkarn and Mom Ubol Yugala Na Ayudhya. His grandfather was Prince Yugala Dighambara, the Prince of Lopburi and a son of King Chulalongkorn. He was the younger brother of MC Chatrichalerm Yugala, the renowned filmmaker (The Legend of Suriyothai, King Naresuan).

A staunch royalist, MC Chulcherm was active on social media, expressing opinions on a variety of subjects, sometimes to the discomfort of politicians and other public figures.

MC Chulcherm began his early education at Vajiravudh College and continued his secondary studies at Srinakharinwirot University Demonstration School, Prasarnmit.

He later attended Kemper Military School in Missouri, in the United States, for his high school education.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Western Pacific University, now California Miramar University, and later completed a master’s degree in sports management.

The prince began his military career as a second lieutenant with the 1st Special Warfare Regiment at Vachiralongkorn Camp in Lop Buri province.

He held several military positions including as an officer in the Royal Guard of HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn (at the time). As a field service officer, he was tasked with counter-communist operations in Khao Kho, Phetchabun, in 1975.

Other positions included postings with the Army Intelligence Department and the Internal Security Operations Command, special royal guard to HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana, and assistant director of the Policy and Planning Office, Royal Guard Command.

At the time of his passing, MC Chulcherm served as a senior special military officer with the Royal Security Command under the Royal Guard unit.
