The opening ceremony of the project, titled ‘Retracing the History of Islam in Phuket Province’, was held at Robinson Lifestyle Mall in Thalang on Saturday night (Sept 13).

PPAO President Rewat Areerob delivered the opening address, while Justice Minister Pol Col Thawee Sodsong presided over the ceremony.

Srisoonthorn Mayor Chalermpol Kerdsap gave a welcoming address, and Pol Lt Col Dr Komon Dumlak, Chairman of the Phuket Provincial Islamic Committee, presented on the promotion of Islamic activities in the province, explained an official report of the event.

Held Saturday and Sunday (Sept 13-14), the event brought together PPAO executives, council members, government officials and distinguished guests.

Its objectives were to instil a sense of religious awareness, preserve Phuket’s cultural diversity, and promote love and unity among children, youth and the wider community, noted the report.

Exhibitions showcased the history of Islam in Phuket, while cultural performances by children and youth reflected both history and teachings of the faith.

Highlights included ‘nasheed’ singing, stage plays, public service activities and a bustling fair with clothing, local products and halal food.

Mr Rewat said the PPAO hopes the initiative will help nurture respect for religious identity while encouraging harmony among Phuket’s multicultural communities.
