Patong Surf Life Saving cautioned beachgoers not to touch or play with the creatures. Anyone stung should immediately seek help from lifeguards stationed on the beach, the warning stressed.

The alert comes nearly as standard at this time of year, during the southwest monsoon. In July, officers from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) Andaman Sea and Coastal Resources Research Centre inspected Kata Noi after lifeguards confirmed the presence of bluebottles and other venomous sea creatures at Kata Noi and Karon beaches.

The DMCR survey found Portuguese man o’ war measuring up to two centimetres across, as well as blue sea dragons (Glaucilla sp.), a small but dangerous predator that feeds on venomous jellyfish and stores their toxins. Blue button jellyfish (Porpita porpita) and by-the-wind sailors (V. velella) were also present along the shore.

Authorities have urged tourists and residents to exercise extreme caution, avoid touching unfamiliar marine creatures, and follow safety guidance posted by lifeguards. First aid advice includes rinsing stings with vinegar and avoiding freshwater or rubbing the skin, which can worsen symptoms.

Lifeguards remain on high alert across Patong, Kata and Karon beaches and are continuing shoreline patrols. Tourists are advised to check beach safety flags and consult lifeguards before swimming.
