Region 8 Police Commander Pol Lt Gen Surapong Thanomchit led the official launch ceremony for the crackdown, held at the front of the Phuket City Police Station at 5pm yesterday (Oct 1).
The event was attended by several key officials, including Pol Maj Gen Sinlert Sukhum, Commander of the Phuket Provincial Police.
“The annual Vegetarian Festival, which will take place from Oct 3-11, 2024, is expected to draw large crowds of both Thai-Chinese locals and tourists,” Lt Gen Surapong said.
“The festival will see many visitors flocking to Phuket for the traditional celebrations. In response, the Phuket Provincial Police are focusing on crime prevention and public safety, with heightened efforts to prevent incidents such as theft and fires caused by ceremonial incense and candles,” he explained.
To ensure the smooth and safe running of the festival, police forces have been reinforced with personnel from multiple units, including officers from the Phuket Provincial Police, Investigation Division, Tourist Police, Immigration, Marine Police, and military officers, as well as local volunteers, Lt Gen Surapong noted.
A total of 350 individuals are involved in the operation, he said.
Pol Lt Gen. Surapong emphasised that campaign is part of the Royal Thai Police’s broader strategy to maintain public safety, especially during major festivals.
He highlighted the need for continuous vigilance and strict law enforcement during events that attract large gatherings.
“The safety of the public and tourists is our top priority,” he said. “We are committed to using all necessary precautions and police tactics to ensure the safety of everyone during the Vegetarian Festival.”
