Police bust Talat Yai illegal gambling den

PHUKET: Police have confirmed a raid was made on an illegal gambling den in Talat Yai during the early hours of yesterday (Apr 6) and a total of 32 arrests made.

Pol. Col. Prathueng Phonmana, superintendent from Mueang Police Station, oversaw the raid which occurred just after 12:30am yesterday at the second floor of a three-storey building on Chanacharoen Road.

Police reported that the doors to the venue and room were both unlocked so they entered to discover a number of people gathered around two separate tables clearly in the process of gambling illegally.

Thirty-two male and female gamblers were arrested and many items were seized during the raid, including two round tables used for gambling, signs with rules, 14 decks of opened cards, five decks of unopened cards and cash.

A number of police officers also surveyed the third foor of the building where they discovered further evidence of illegal gambling activity with tables, cards and cash scattered across a table.

The people manning the table and the people gambling were both detained and arrested as part of the overall number of 32, police confirmed, although no specific details were released in regards to charges at time of press. Likewise, no details were shared in relation to the nationalities of the people detained.

Police did confirm, however, that one individual who appeared to be the person responsible to organising the occasion was to be charged with “organised gambling without permission.”

Yesterday’s raid aligns with a recent directive from Acting National Police Commissioner Pol Gen Kitrat Panphet who has instructed a clampdown on illegal gambling across the country.
