Pol Gen Prachuap, accompanied by Pol Lt Gen Surapong Thanomchit, Commander of Region 8 Police, and other senior officials joined the foray into the heart of Patong’s nightlife district last night (Dec 29).
Pol Gen Prachuap explained that Royal Thai Police have issued directives to ensure strict enforcement of safety measures for tourists during the 2025 New Year festival with a proactive effort to enhance crime prevention, maintain order and promote safety.
The New Year campaign involves integrated forces with over 100 police officers, he said.
Together with local security agencies, Civil Defence Volunteers (OrSor) and private sector representatives, Pol Gen Prachuap and his entourage conducted an “inspection” of Soi Bangla Post and visited the Bangla Police Box.
The inspection aimed to raise public awareness, implement safety measures and address concerns aligned with government policy, Pol Gen Prachuap said.
Pol Gen Prachuap emphasised the importance of compliance with the Royal Thai Police’s safety measures to reduce accidents and ensure the well-being of tourists.
He directed the establishment of checkpoints and barriers to follow “tactical principles and legal frameworks”, stressing the need for officers to communicate politely with the public, said an official report of his visit.
The key measures announced for the New Year comprised:
- Enhanced Security for Countdown Events: Authorities will intensify management of crowded areas to ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration for all visitors.
- Crackdown on Crime: Special attention will be given to combating human trafficking, crimes involving children and youth, drugs, firearms and gambling.
- Tourist Protection: Enforce measures to prevent exploitation of tourists by unscrupulous individuals, including illegal tour guides and overcharging taxi drivers. Officers are also instructed to respond swiftly to any incidents involving tourists and work closely with relevant agencies.
- Increased Police Presence: Over 2,000 personnel will be deployed during the 10-day safety operation from Dec 27 to Jan 5. This includes 131 crime prevention checkpoints, 58 traffic checkpoints, and 124 mobile units.
Pol Gen Prachuap reiterated the importance of transparency, instructing officers to avoid soliciting benefits from tourists, said the official report.
He also called for enhanced public relations efforts in high-traffic areas to boost confidence in Thailand’s safety standards.
Pol Gen Prachuap also highlighted the necessity of special operations teams to handle emergencies and the preparation of medical response measures. Commanders at all levels were urged to visit their teams, provide guidance and ensure their readiness through proper equipment checks.
“As Phuket braces for a surge in visitors during the New Year festivities, the Royal Thai Police remain committed to creating a secure environment for both locals and tourists. With the theme ‘Don’t Drink and Drive, We Will Drive for You,’ the campaign aims to promote responsible behavior and reduce risks on the roads,” Pol Gen Prachuap said.
