The attack took place on Muang Thong–Khao Khad Road, near Muang Thong Market, where the victim, identified only as ‘Thanwa’, was riding his motorcycle.
Police said three youths on another motorbike confronted him before one fired a gun, hitting him in the back. He was rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital in serious condition.
Following an investigation, Wichit Police sought arrest warrants from the Phuket Provincial Court for attempted murder, possession of firearms without permission and carrying weapons in a public area.
Officers led by Pol Lt Col Thirawat Amnatcharoenying moved to arrest the suspects yesterday (Aug 25), Wichit Police reported.
The alleged shooter, Wasan ‘Bang Seed’, 22, was taken into custody with the firearm and motorcycle believed to have been used in the attack.
He confessed to the charges of attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and firing a gun in a public area without justification, police said.
A second suspect, a 15-year-old boy whose name was withheld due to his age, was arrested as the alleged driver of the motorcycle used in the attack. He also confessed and is facing similar charges, with his case transferred to the Phuket Juvenile and Family Court.
Further raids at six other locations led to additional arrests of gang members. ‘Bankchat’, 27, was caught with a homemade shotgun barrel, a firing pin and shotgun shells, and charged with illegal possession of a firearm. Another member, ‘Rapirapat’ (alias ‘Art’), was arrested for possession of methamphetamine.
Police confirmed the group is part of the ‘Sapchang’ gang. While no offences were found against other members, investigators seized four motorcycles and compiled a database of the group.
Officers also confirmed that parents of underage offenders will face legal action under the Child Protection Act for failing to prevent their children’s involvement in criminal activities.
Pol Col Somsak said the crackdown is part of a wider effort to dismantle youth gangs in the Wichit area and prevent further violent clashes.
