In a bid to enhance safety and law enforcement for tourists, Prime Minister Settha Thavisin has directed the Royal Thai Police to develop a comprehensive strategy known as the ‘Phuket Model’, said an official report of the meeting issued late yesterday (Apr 23).
This initiative, announced on Sunday (Apr 21) during a meeting at the Banyan Tree Hotel in Phuket, aims to address illegal activities and ensure the well-being of visitors in popular tourist destinations, the report noted.
The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Thavisin, saw the participation of key figures including Phuket Vice Governor Norasak Suksomboon, and other high-ranking police officials, as well as consuls from 12 countries and representatives from various governmental and private agencies.
Pol Gen Kittirat outlined the measures to prevent illegal activities by foreign visitors in Phuket, including the establishment of a comprehensive database to inform tourists of prohibited actions, collaboration with relevant authorities to combat foreign criminal organizations and strict enforcement of laws governing foreign car rental operators.
The “holistic approach”, known as the “Phuket Model”, aims to elevate tourism standards and ensure the safety of visitors, Pol Gen Kittirat said.
PM Thavisin said the government was committed to addressing long-standing challenges, such as water shortages and infrastructure improvements, to support the tourism industry. He highlighted investments in water supply projects and road expansions to alleviate congestion, alongside efforts to tackle wastewater issues.
Acknowledging the importance of law enforcement in maintaining stability and fostering economic growth, PM Thavisin urged cooperation from all stakeholders, including honorary consuls, in upholding national security. He emphasised the significance of enforcing laws to prevent reputational damage to tourist destinations like Phuket, noted the report.
However, concerns were raised regarding the Patong area, particularly Soi Bangla, known for its bustling nightlife. Pol Gen Kittirat has been tasked with enhancing security measures in Patong Police Station and Bangla Police Station to ensure the safety of tourists and prevent illicit activities, the report confirmed.
“The implementation of the Phuket Model signals a concerted effort by the Thai government to prioritise tourist safety and uphold the country’s reputation as a premier travel destination. With plans to expand the model to other popular tourist regions like Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Pattaya, authorities are poised to strengthen law enforcement and safeguard the interests of visitors across Thailand,” the report concluded.
