The project aims to prevent drug problems, accidents and various forms of violence in order to build confidence in the safety of passengers and service users, explained Phuket Airport General Manager Monchai Tanode at the opening ceremony.
Gathered in front of the International Terminal were a host of officers and personnel involved in providing security at the airport, including officers from Tourist Police Station, Sakhu Police, Phuket Airport Immigration, Phuket Airport Customs House and personnel from the Volunteer Defense Corps (OrSor).
Also present were officials from the Phuket Land Transport Office (PLTO), Thalang District Office and Mai Khao Tambon Administrative Organisation (OrBorTor).
As part of the project launch taxi drivers at the airport underwent random drug testing, while checkpoints were set up to ensure all taxis serving passengers at the airport were legal.
“The implementation of security measures for passengers and users of Phuket Airport and all forms of related services helps strengthen the image of being a safe tourist city for Phuket Province and Thailand, helping the tourism industry to be sustainable and ready to continue generating income for Phuket Province and Thailand,” Mr Monchai said.
