Phuket Town Mayor Suphot La-ongphet said the move follows the completion of a comprehensive database identifying residents within the municipality who have autism or intellectual disabilities. The initiative is in line with the municipality’s “Leaving No One Behind” policy.
“Everyone is a valuable human resource,” Mayor Suphot said. “We aim to ensure that autistic individuals and those with intellectual disabilities receive the same opportunities and support as everyone else.”
After reviewing the database, Mayor Suphot held discussions with Ruengrit Ritthaphai, Director of Phuket City Municipality’s Medical Division, about improving access to specialised care. Many parents currently face difficulties accessing treatment through public or private hospitals, compounded by the shortage of professionals in the field, he explained.
Under the 2026 budget, the Medical Division has been tasked with exploring a regulatory framework to recruit psychologists and occupational therapists directly to the Phuket City Municipality Medical Division.
This would enhance the capacity to provide comprehensive care, including intellectual development, social skills training, and activities designed to build confidence for independent living, Mayor Suphot said.
“These measures will help ensure that individuals can learn, participate, and thrive in society in a sustainable way,” he added.
