The initiative, an annual event, once again involves using private raw water sources as reserves to ensure a stable tap water supply for residents.

Phuket Town Deputy Mayor Suphot La-ongphet last week conducted a site survey at the Thai Village Water Source, located behind Phuket Rajabhat University.

He was joined by Seksan Pakdeewanich, Director of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) Division at Phuket City Municipality, and Prinya Chariyahatthakit, Director of the Infrastructure Development Division at the PPAO.

Their discussions focused on strategies for using raw water from various sources to maintain water availability throughout the dry season.

A team of municipal and provincial officials, including Pibulsak Kittithorakul, Secretary to the Phuket Town Mayor Saroj Angkanapilas, and Charan Klaewthanong, Director of Phuket City Municipality’s Waterworks Division, also participated in the survey.

They visited Khum Nam Thai Village in Ratsada to assess the viability of using private water reserves in case municipal supplies fall short.

According to Deputy Mayor Suphot, the pre-emptive site survey iss crucial in preparing for extended periods of drought. The PPAO has committed to providing high-pressure water pumps to assist in transporting water from private reserves to the municipal waterworks if necessary, Mr Suphot said.

Currently, the raw water reserve in Khum Nam Thai Village stands at approximately 700,000 cubic metres. This supply serves as a backup should Phuket City Municipality’s own water sources prove insufficient.

Presently, the municipality serves two subdistricts ‒ Talat Nuea and Talat Yai ‒ with a daily water consumption of approximately 23,000 units. Key municipal water reserves include Khum Nam Suan Luang (200,000 cubic metres), Khum Nam Soi Phaneng (700,000 cubic metres), and Khum Nam Rungrawi (100,000 cubic metres).

With the combined efforts of the municipality, provincial administration and private water owners, Phuket City Municipality aim to mitigate the impact of water shortages and ensure minimal disruption for residents during the dry season, Mr Suphot said.
