Phuket Town Mayor Suphot La-ongphet chaired a meeting at the municipality offices on Friday (Aug 8) to finalise preparations. Joining him were Deputy Mayor Phibunsak Kittithorakul, municipal officials and representatives from the Tourism and Sports Division.
The festival will be held at shrines, markets, and communities across Phuket Town, including the Phuket Thai Hua Museum, Hok Nguan Kong Shrine on Phuket Rd, Jo Ong Shrine on Krabi Rd, Ban San Market on Ranong Rd, Por Tor Kong Bang Niao Shrine, Takua Thung Rd, Ao Ke Community, Takua Pa Rd and the Suriyadet Circle on Ratsada Rd.
Por Tor, a centuries-old tradition observed by Phuket’s Peranakan Chinese community, centres on making merit for the spirits of ancestors. Families offer sweet and savoury dishes, fruits and vegetables carved into elaborate designs, alongside the festival’s most recognisable symbol – the bright red turtle cake.
Available in sizes ranging from palm-sized to several metres long, the red turtle represents longevity, strength and good fortune. Offerings are made both at home and at local shrines, accompanied by traditional performances, lion dances, and merit-making ceremonies.
“The Por Tor festival is an important cultural heritage of Phuket. It is an opportunity for families to express gratitude to their ancestors while bringing the community together in celebration,” Mayor Suphot said.
Events will run for more than two weeks, with highlights including processions, cultural shows, and communal merit-making. The municipality is encouraging locals and visitors alike to take part in the festivities.
