Phuket Town Mayor Saroj Angkhanapilas explained today (June 19) that officials have been put on flood watch following recent rainfall, combined with forecasts by the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) of more heavy rainfall from this Friday through to next Tuesday (June 21-25).
The TMD forecasts intensified rainfall across the region due to a strengthening monsoon and a low-pressure area over the South China Sea.
From June 21-25, a monsoon trough is expected to pass over northern and northeastern Thailand, leading to increased rainfall across all regions, with heavy rain expected in several areas including Phuket.
The Andaman coast in the south is expected to see rainfall covering 60% of the area.
In response, Phuket City Municipality is maintaining continuous surveillance of water levels, which currently remain normal, Mayor Saroj said.
Officials at water gates and pumping stations have been instructed to monitor water levels closely, he added.
Phuket City Municipality urges residents to stay informed and vigilant, particularly regarding potential heavy rainfall which could cause flash floods in high-risk areas, he added.
Residents in need of assistance can contact the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office of Phuket City Municipality either in person, by phone at 076-211111 or via the emergency hotline 199. Officials are on standby 24/7 to provide support and assistance to the public, Mayor Saroj noted.
