The exhibition, now open at the ‘Museum Phuket’, located in the old Chartered Bank Building on Phang Nga Rd in Phuket Town, aims to educate the public and tourists on the importance of hygiene and its role in urban development.
The event was officially inaugurated by Phuket Town Mayor Saroj Angkanapilas on Thursday (Feb 27), with government officials, private sector representatives and members of the public in attendance.
Speaking at the opening, Mayor Saroj highlighted the exhibition’s role in the ‘Discover Restroom’ initiative, which seeks to promote awareness of sanitation as a reflection of social progress.
“Toilets are more than just a necessity for hygiene; they symbolize the advancement of civilization, shaping the way societies and cities evolve over time,” he said.
Organised in collaboration with Museum Siam Phuket, the exhibition takes visitors through the historical journey of sanitation in Phuket, with interactive displays and engaging activities.
The exhibition is divided into five zones:
- World of Toilets – A global perspective on human waste management, presented through an educational toilet-themed game.
- Civilization in the Toilet – A showcase of different toilet types reflecting Phuket’s urban growth across various periods.
- Phuket’s Memory Toilets – A look at the island’s early public health and sanitation management systems.
- Public Toilets – An interactive experience exploring the importance of restrooms in a bustling tourist city, featuring the *Toilet Detective* game.
- Showing Off – A quirky, immersive section allowing visitors to experience creative toilet settings, from beachside restrooms to Peranakan-style facilities.
The ‘Phuket Toilet: Civilization in the Gooseneck’ exhibition at the Phuket Museum is open to the public until Sept 30. For more information, visitors can call 094-8077873 or visit the museum’s website or Facebook page.
