In announcing the project, Phuket Town Mayor Saroj Angkhanapilas emphasised the critical importance of effective solid waste management and highlighted the establishment of the community waste bank as a significant step forward.

Joining Mayor Saroj for the official launch of the waste bank, on Sunday (Feb 11), were Pairoj Kirirak, Chairman of Samakkhi Samkong Community, and Noppadol Jenrua, Councillor for Phuket City District 1.

The collaboration with the Samakkhi Samkong community is poised to spearhead Phuket’s waste reduction efforts officially. The primary objective of this initiative is to raise awareness across all sectors regarding waste management operations, particularly through the concept of a waste bank, Mayor Saroj explained.

“By encouraging participation from households and communities, the project aims to reduce waste generation while simultaneously generating added value,” he added.

The launch of the waste bank included activities to demonstrate the practical aspects of waste management, including waste separation techniques, buying and selling of recycled waste, recruitment of members, and guidelines for deposits and withdrawals from the ‘bank’.

The exchange of operational strategies with the Samakkhi Samkong Community Waste Bank committee further solidified the commitment to effective waste management practices.

Mayor Saroj invited the public to actively engage in recycling efforts by availing themselves of the services offered by the Samakkhi Samkong Community Waste Bank. Items eligible for purchase include clear and opaque plastic water bottles, assorted plastics, newspapers, cardboard, various types of paper, glass bottles, aluminium cans and iron cans.

The Waste Bank will be open for transactions from 9am to midday on the first Sunday of every month.
