The festival, organised by the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO) in partnership with over 10 network collaborators, aims to solidify the city’s reputation as a leading destination for gastronomic tourism.

The ‘Phuket Peranakan Menu to the World’ event, held at Dragon Plaza at Queen Sirikit Park in Phuket Town yesterday, drew a host of guests. Leading the opening ceremony was PPAO President Rewat Areerob, joined by Kosol Tang-Uthai, President of the Peranakan Association of Thailand, and Anchalee Vanich Thepabutr, who serves as Advisor to the Phuket Peranakan Association.

Also attending the event were Lertchai Wangtrakuldee, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Phuket office; Narong Promjitta, of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) Southern Regional Office; and Boonperm Intanapasat, President of the Thai International Festivals and Events Promotion Association (TIEFA).

The event was held as part of a larger initiative to boost the local economy by elevating Phuket’s Peranakan cuisine to international prominence, said an official report of the event.

The festival is set to promote the famous Phuket Peranakan dish, ‘Phuket Hokkien Noodles’. which will be featured in the Guinness World Records in 2025, the report added. No details were provided as to exactly why the dish would be added to the esteemed book of records.

Holding the festival is expected to further establish Phuket as a hub for food and culture, the report noted.

Previous promotional events held as part of the campaign included a display of artworks at the Woo Gallery in Phuket Town, and a demonstration of cooking ‘Mee Hokkien’ at a Sino-Portuguese shophouse on Thalang Rd in the Phuket Old Town area last Thursday (Sept 26).
