The festival, which continues through tomorrow night (Feb 17), is aimed at promoting tourism in the Phuket Old Town and stimulating the local economy, and celebrating the cultural heritage and traditional way of life of ethnic Chinese in Phuket Town.
Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat led the opening ceremony, joined by Phuket Town Mayor Saroj Angkhanapilas and a host of other leading provincial figures.
Governor Sophon emphasised the significance of the event in bolstering Phuket’s tourism sector, renowned globally for its marine attractions and diverse cultural identity. He praised the efforts of organisers and partners in creating an event that he said not only showcases Phuket’s rich heritage but also generates opportunities for local businesses and residents.
Phuket Town Mayor Mr Saroj echoed Governor Sophon’s sentiments, emphasising the collaborative effort behind the festival and the importance of leveraging Phuket’s cultural capital to create sustainable economic benefits for the local community.
Under the theme of ‘Phuket Festival 2024: Happiness in All Dimensions’, the festival features a variety of activities aimed at engaging residents and tourists alike, from traditional stage performances to interactive art installations for local residents and visitors alike to enjoy.
One of the highlights of the festival is the ‘Dragon Lantern Tunnel’, an illuminated display stretching over 40 metres along Phuket Rd. Additionally, visitors can participate in scavenger hunts, craft activities and culinary experiences showcasing Phuket’s diverse food culture.
As part of the festivities, participants also have the opportunity to take part in the symbolic ‘Lighting Red Candles’ ceremony, believed to bring good fortune and prosperity. The event encapsulates the spirit of community and celebration, fostering a sense of pride and belonging among Phuket residents, said an official report of the festival launch.
“With its blend of tradition, culture, and commerce, the ‘Chinese New Year Phuket 2024’ festival promises to be a memorable experience for all who attend, reinforcing Phuket’s position as a premier destination for cultural exploration and economic vitality,” the report added.
