Phuket Town officials were on watch throughout the night, manning pumps deployed throughout the town and monitoring the water level in the Bang Yai Canal.
Klong Bang Yai came close to bursting its banks, but held its water, Phuket Town Mayor Saroj Angkanapilas confirmed. Mayor Saroj was out in the rain throughout the night during the flood-watch vigil.
Many streets throughout the town were inundated with several inches of water, but no serious flooding was reported.
In Chalong, floodwater across both Chao Fa West and Chao Fa East roads that disrupted traffic late yesterday afternoon had cleared by this morning, with only some areas still waiting for standing water to clear.
In Rawai, however, a section of the side of Wiset Rd in the Saiyuan area has collapsed. The affected area is about 50 metres long and has been marked off for safety. Motorists have been advised to exercise caution when driving past the affected area.
During the onslaught of continual driving rain late yesterday, Karon Municipality evacuated residents from flash flood-prone areas to Wat Kittisangkaram (Wat Kata) for temporary shelter.
Mueang Phuket District Chief Worasit Phutjib visited the flood-affected areas, joined by Phuket MP Chalermpong Saengdee and Karon Mayor Jadet Wicharasorn, and local village leaders, to ensure disaster-response plans were in effect..
Mr Worasit ordered the Phuket branch of the Volunteer Defense Corps (OrSor) and other agencies to provide immediate assistance in flood-struck areas.
Many areas throughout Mueang District were affected by flash floods, including Patak Rd in front of Por Piang Market in Baan Kata, as well as Baan Khok Chang on the Borrae-Khao Khad Rd, and various other roads across Tambon Karon, Wichit and Rawai.
In many cases, water inundated homes, while fallen trees caused damage to power lines, DDPM Phuket noted.
Workers from the Phuket Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office (DDPM), the Phuket Highways office, local municipalities and workers from the Phuket branch of the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA Phuket) have all been dispatched to drain floodwaters and restore all services.
Officials are closely monitoring the situation, especially as the region remains in the middle of monsoon season, reported DDPM Phuket.
Even if the rain subsides, local authorities are urging all residents to remain vigilant until further notice, the agency said.
