The Thai Amateur Weightlifting Association (TAWA) is collaborating with Phuket Province to host the event at Phuket Rajabhat University between Mar 31 and Apr 11 next year, it was confirmed on Thursday (Nov 9).

It is estimated that over 1,500 people, including athletes, coaches and associated staff members, will attend the event, which Phuket officials said will provide a significant boost to the local economy.

The occasion takes on even greater importance as it will offer the final opportunity for aspiring athletes to accrue the necessary points to ensure qualification for the Olympics in the French capital, to be held in July and August next year.

The announcement was made at a press conference at Phuket Provincial Hall on Thursday where Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat appointed Thawan Phetsuk, Head of Phuket Provincial Office, to oversee and manage the project.

Also present at the press conference were: Major General Intharat Yodbangtoey, TAWA Honorary President; General Wisut Dejsakul, TAWA Secretary General; Damrong Chaisena, Director of Sport Association of Thailand Phuket Office; and selected members from public and private sector bodies.

Most of those involved with the competition will travel to Phuket in advance and remain throughout the duration, said Mr Thawan, meaning a huge financial boost for local hotels on the island, as well as many smaller businesses.

Additionally, while not competing, athletes and their teams can enjoy the island by sightseeing and shopping, which will provide a further boost to Phuket’s image as a top tourist destination, Mr Thawan added.

During the competition itself there will be a significant focus on the importance of “clean sport”, with several campaigns emphasising anti-doping.

This comes after Thailand was banned from international weightlifting competition on Mar 7, 2019 after eight of the association’s weightlifters - including 2016 Rio Olympic champions Sukanya Srisurat and Sopita Tanasan - tested positive for banned substances at the 2018 world championships.

After appeal, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) allowed Thailand to return to international competitions after June 18, 2021.

The event will receive extensive media coverage and further details around the competition will be released closer to the date, officials confirmed.
