The issue was discussed at a meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall chaired by Phuket Vice Governor Norasak Suksomboon and attended by local representatives of the Phuket Province Office, heads of local government agencies, local district and government organisation (OrBorTor and municipality) leaders, and other relevant agencies.
The ‘Clean Province’ community solid waste management contest for 2024 is divided into two main categories: the prototype group and the general group.
The prototype group includes Lamphun, Ubon Ratchathani and Satun provinces, recognised for their sustainable community solid waste management practices. The general group, known as the ‘Sa-at provinces’ (‘Clean Provinces’), is further divided into three subgroups based on the size of the provinces:
- Large Provinces: Roi Et, Maha Sarakham and Surin
- Medium-sized Provinces: Sukhothai, Lampang and Loei
- Small Provinces: Mukdahan, Mae Hong Son and Phuket
Phuket Province has been selected to participate in the evaluation within the small provinces subgroup, Vice Governor Norasak confirmed.
A subcommittee has been assigned to visit areas to inspect, evaluate and select provinces that exemplify effective community solid waste management practices, he added.
An evaluation visit is scheduled to take place from this Sunday and Monday (June 30 to July 1) to determine Phuket’s standing in the national contest.
During the meeting, various missions were assigned to agencies to ensure thorough preparation for the evaluation. These preparations include organising the venue at Queen Sirikit Park in Phuket Town, where exhibitions will be set up on topics such as garbage banks, community environmental management learning centers and beach waste management.
There also will be a focus on public participation models and creating a video presentation to showcase the waste management efforts in Phuket Province, V/Gov Norasak said.
