Phuket survives Songkran Day with no road deaths

PHUKET: Phuket has survived the first three days of the ‘Seven Days’ safety campaign for Songkran 2024 with no deaths, but the tally so far stands at 24 people hospitalised for injuries in the 24 accidents recognised by local officials.

Officials recognised 12 people admitted to hospital for injuries in 12 accidents for the 24 hours of yesterday (Apr 13), according to the daily report prepared by the Phuket branch of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM Phuket).

Three people were injured in three accidents in Muang District, four were injured in four accidents in Thalang District and five people were injured in five accidents in Kathu District, said the report.

Of the 24 people admitted to hospital for road-accident injuries, 16 were Thai nationals, five were Myanmar nationals and three were marked as “foreigners”, said the DDPM Phuket report.

Of note, national road safety agency ThaiRSC reported 128 people injured in road accidents in Phuket yesterday.

The ‘Seven Days’ safety campaign for Songkran 2024 began at midnight last Wednesday night and will continue through to midnight this Wednesday night (Apr 17).

Phuket last year concluded the Seven Days safety campaign for Songkran with five people killed and 51 people admitted to hospital for injuries sustained in road accidents.

ThaiRSC currently reports 55 deaths and 8,014 people injured in road accidents in Phuket since Jan 1.

While Phuket provincial officials have stopped reporting any statistics of police arrests for traffic violations during the ‘Seven Days’ safety campaigns, Patong Police this morning reported four people charged for drunk driving.

The arrests were reported as of 1am today (Apr 14), with two Thais, one Russian and one Myanmar national charged for drunk driving.

The report named the four only as: Mr Angkadej, Thai national, 59; Mr Piya, Thai national, 42; Mr Artem, Russian national, 35; and Mr Ang Teak, Myanmar national, 36.

Patong Police began their campaign to charge drunk divers in the busy tourist town before the Songkran celebrations took full flight yesterday, with five reported as arrested between 00.30am and 2:30am yesterday (Apr 13).

The five were named as: Mr Sevli, Russian national, blood alcohol content (BAC) reading 67mg/dL; Mr Manpreet, Indian national. BAC 146mg/dL; Mr Adgar, German national, BAC 69mg/dL; Mr Chervil, Russian national. BAC 153mg/dL; and Mr Ritthikiat, Thai national, BAC 113mg/dL.
