The event, held at Central Phuket Festival shopping mall last weekend (June 14-15), was presided over by Phuket Vice Governor Suwit Phansengiam, while Charassri Khampeerasingh, Chief of the Phuket Provincial Agriculture Office, welcomed attendees and outlined the event’s objectives.
Although widely known as a world-class tourist destination, Phuket also holds significant potential in agriculture, particularly in cultivating ‘native durian’ and ‘Phuket pineapple’, both known for their distinctive and delicious taste, noted an official report of the event.
The province currently has approximately 2,941 rai of durian plantations and 908 rai of pineapple farms, with Phuket pineapple officially registered as a Geographical Indication (GI) product.
The event, supported by funding from the Agricultural Products Promotion and Development Project, aimed to raise the profile of Phuket’s quality agricultural produce, strengthen ties with the tourism sector and generate additional income for local farming communities, the report explained.
More than 20 booths showcased native durian, Phuket pineapple and a variety of products from farmer housewife groups, community enterprises and “new-generation” farmers.
The programme also featured agricultural product processing demonstrations, a Phuket Pineapple Identity Exhibition, free durian tastings and a fruit-eating competition.
The event received strong cooperation from agricultural networks, government agencies, private sector partners and local media, the official report noted.
